About Experiential Unifying Psychotherapy (E.U.P.) — brief

Experiential Unifying Psychotherapy (E.U.P.) integrates lived experience, metaphor and creative work to reconnect the Ego with the Self. Practically, we transform experiences and emotions into resources and meaning — in a gentle yet deep process.

Targets: unlocking development, clarity, creative adaptation, resilience; healthier relationships in couples and families.

More details — theoretical & methodological specifics

E.U.P. is a holistic method centered on symbolic analysis, personal development and self-change through challenging experiential exercises, improvisation and creative meditation supported by expressive arts. It harnesses the transformative power of metaphor and re-signification of lived experience, reconnecting Ego and Self and stimulating unifying, integrative and transcending processes, individually and in groups. It can be individual or collective (group, family, organizational), for adults as well as children and adolescents. It places human development and transformation at the center.

Procedures and “vehicles” for self-knowledge and self-transformation include awareness of the here-and-now (“witness state”), symbolic reconstruction and action in the present through universal languages: drama-therapy improvisation focused on reconversion of polarities; symbolic and transformational access to spontaneous expression — verbal and bodily, individual and group — through posture, rhythm, movement and dance, melorhythmic and sonic improvisation; creative visual expression — drawing, modeling, collage; constructive creative improvisation based on the projective value of natural elements — shells, stones, crystals, clay, bark, leaves, branches, seeds etc.; metaphorical and narrative improvisation (verbal) with and without projective support — fractals, photo creation, plastic/sonic/corporal expression; symbolic scenarios and play, making masks and therapeutic work with masks and puppets, etc.

The approach to the person and group is grounded in a holistic, synergetic and integrative model of somatic, psychological and spiritual manifestations of the human being. The methodology aims — through specific, original techniques — to unify, harmonize and enhance functioning along three synchronous axes: Ego–Self transformations, unconscious–conscious–transconscious, and time. In Unifying Therapy, the transgenerational and spiritual perspective tends to become integral to the unifying process at individual, family and group levels.

Objectives: unlock personal and collective development; activate resources and creative intentionality in psycho-spiritual maturation and in changing life scripts; rediscover meaning and self-valuing within a unifying and reintegrative therapeutic process of the personality from the perspective of identity roles (masculine, feminine, parental-filial). It aims at re-naturalizing and propelling the human being on a line of healthy, ecological development by accessing and qualitatively reconverting the relationship between the polarities of the psyche.

Expected effects: expanded awareness and self-knowledge; authenticity; spontaneity and quality of communication; contact skills and role behaviors (in couple, family, interpersonal relations, profession and organizations); creative adaptation; increased self-acceptance, self-confidence and assertion; affective and spiritual maturation; stimulation of empathy and capacity to love, support and value; development of novel, responsible and realistic life scenarios and alternatives; increased personal, family and collective capacity to face stress, crisis and change; activation and redirection of self-compensatory resources in illness and existential impasse; the exercise of freedom, democratic participation, self-accountability and responsible creative effectiveness.

Theoretical consonances and overlaps with: analytic and other psychodynamic therapies, Gestalt therapy, creative group therapies, NLP, logotherapy, transgenerational and psychogenealogical therapy, certain transpersonal and meditative approaches, other experiential therapies (e.g., narrative family therapy, Leslie Greenberg’s Emotion-Focused Therapy, Morenian psychodrama, Francis Macnab’s contextual-modular psychotherapy, trauma-focused therapy).
